Micah Lecture - Professor Whitney Holmes

The Vice Provost for Community Engagement and Belonging will host Mrs. Whitney Holmes, Associate Professor of Law, on March 25-26 for the 2026 Micah Lectures.

Contemporary credit systems do more than just price risk—they produce, distribute, and entrench risk through ostensibly neutral lending practices. Building on legal, economic, and sociological accounts of how markets organize and channel power, The Violence of the Banks traces how seemingly objective metrics like “creditworthiness" can reproduce inequality by sorting borrowers into economic, social, and physical zones of neglect. By considering the counterproductive dimensions of credit, the project reveals how debt-based social provision exacerbates patterns of poverty and exclusion.
